Senior Companion Program

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Crete Public Library District
Large Room
Regan Kasprak, Senior Companion Program Coordinator for Catholic Charities, will present information on a free service and volunteer opportunity in our community.

The Senior Companion Program (SCP) provides free weekly home visits to homebound seniors (who no longer drive) and want to remain living independently in their own homes. Companions meet with clients for social visits (e.g. talking, playing games, crafts, and other activities) and may also assist with occasional local transportation to grocery stores, doctor appointments, and other destinations. These volunteers can also provide respite care for family caregivers by giving them the time to rest and refresh.

The volunteers that Catholic Charities are looking for are seniors (55+) who have some extra time and are willing to volunteer with other older adults in their community.

If you would like more information on becoming a Senior Companion or if you would like a Senior Companion to assist you, please attend this session.

UPDATE - Class is full, but we have added a second session on the same day/time.

Joyce Madison from AARP will conduct the Smart Driver program at the Crete Public Library. A fee of $20 is payable by cash or check made out to AARP on the first day of class. The class continues on Tuesday, February 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will not be a lunch period, so you are welcome to bring snacks, if you wish to eat during the 10-15 minute break.

The AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first refresher course specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older. In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. And you will learn something new along the way. In fact, an evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit as a result of what they learned.
